The 46th Top500 list was released this week, With China’s Tianhe-2 topping the list again, for the 6th time. Overall there is little change at the top with only 2 new machines in the top ten.
China’s share of the top 500 has nearly tripled, while the US share is at an all-time historical low. Recent efforts however may change that picture leading up to 2020 and beyond, particularly around the shift to exascale.
Six of the top ten were installed before 2013, reflecting a slowdown overall in competition at the top. Perhaps everyone is putting their money (and efforts and planning) into the race to exascale, which is going to heat up as we approach 2020…
